Description:
This course is designed to prepare students to develop and evaluate children's literacy in literature-based, functional contexts, in accordance with standards for the English Language Arts established by New York State and other professional organizations. Teaching approaches include inquiry, project work, collaborative learning, computer-assisted instruction, direct instruction, the literacy workshop, individual coaching, and the development of independent learning strategies and self-monitoring. Emphais is placed on developing optimal learning environments for all learners, developing early diagnosis and intervention strategies, using literature themes to promote the development of children's natural and functional use of language, and working with children in the larger family and societal context. Students develop integrated activities that involve listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Prerequisites: EPY 244, CMD 235. Open only to majors in the SEED program. Fall, Spring.
