This is a two-term course designed to prepare graduate students as well as students with the equivalent of 3 years of Chinese in the various fields of Chinese studies at Pitt with a reading knowledge of materials written in classical and semi-classical style. The main focus of this course is on the grammar, syntax, and the particular vocabulary of classical Chinese. Comparison between classical Chinese and modern Chinese in these areas will also be dealt with in order to build a bridge between them as well as to teach the underlying coherence between them. The cultural and literary implications of classical Chinese will be discussed throughout the course in order to provide the students not only with the linguistic knowledge of classical Chinese, but the rich historical backgrounds implied in this particular style of Chinese.
