The contemporary American family as a major societal institution and as a social system. A range theoretical models is presented as analytical tools for probing the nature of family interaction under stress. Emphasis is placed on the interactional, systems, and life cycle perspectives as compromising a comprehensive theoretical framework for understanding the types of stresses encounterd by families overtime and the attempts by family members to cope with these stress.
