In order to understand the complexity and diversity of American Literature, it is necessary to become familiar with the context within which the literature has been produced. This survey course is designed to give the student the necessary literary history to serve as a foundation for success in later more advanced courses in English. To this end, the course will cover the major figures of American Letters from at least two genres. Depending on the semester, the course will cover the period of the 1500’s to 1865 or 1865-to the present. Though the historical frame may change from semester to semester, the objectives will not change. This course fulfills one of the 200-level survey requirements in English.
