CS 101 is designed to introduce students to the basics of film analysis and appreciation. We will begin by studying a variety of major film concepts such as mise en scene, montage, and cinematography. During the middle section of the course, we will discuss and practice more advanced approaches to film appreciation such auteur and genre analysis. The final section of the course will focus on a variety of theoretical approaches to film analysis that will include but not be limited to Semiotic and Psychoanalytic criticism. Lastly, throughout the course, we will examine the key political, social, and technological developments that affected the evolution modern film.
