This course will examine how court decisions, statutes, the legal system and the traditional legal approaches to justice have affected, positively and negatively, the experiences of Latinos. We will engage in a comparative analysis of the common-law and civil-law traditions in the U.S, and Latin American countries as a basis of understanding historical and contemporary legal approaches. We will also explore thearea of legal thought known as Critical Legal Studies and Critical Race Theory.
