The course will be taught in a hands on format (in the laboratory or the field), incorporating a minimal amount of traditional, lecture-based instruction and demonstration, and focusing on every day applications using inquiry-based student activities. It is an inquiry based laboratory chemistry course designed for current elementary and middle school classroom teachers pursuing endorsements in the teaching of middle school math and science. The instructional methodology is aligned to the middle school educator standards of the National Science Teachers Association, the National Research Council and the Illinois Content Standards for Educators in Science and in Chemistry. The teaching and learning experiences are designed to build content knowledge in chemistry at the college level while at the same time focusing on the important applications of what is being studied to effective, engaging, authentic and motivating teaching of science in the middle school classroom setting.
