The major poets of classical antiquity-- Homer, Vergil, Ovid,-- and their principal works, Close readings of the poems themselves will be augmented by examination of the cultures (political, social, aesthetic) from which they came. As Greek and Roman cultures are the basis of Western civilization, so these poems are the foundation of Western literature, as well as monuments in the artistic history of humanity.
