Differing viewpoints of language learning and cognitive interaction are presented. Techniques for both language assessment and intervention by the teacher of the young child are discussed. Reviews recent research and its applicability to assist the preschool teacher in facilitating language learning and evaluating existing language programs for using language as a tool of communication.
