This class will introduce the history, evolution and important themes of the American horror film, serving as an overview of the genre and locating it in American literary and cultural traditions. Approaches will include close readings of films as well as psychoanalytic, ideological, and feminist analyses. A number of films and clips will be screened and discussed in the context of course readings.
