ART 302E - Studies In Art History: Andean Art

Institution:
Northeastern Illinois University
Subject:
Art
Description:
This course is an introduction to the civilizations that inhabited the Andean region (primarily what is now Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia). Since these cultures did not develop a written language, information about their worldview, religious practices, and daily lives comes from their art and the archaeological record. We will examine the objects in terms of their style and iconography, as well as their original contexts. We will also explore recurring themes such as shamanistic practices, human sacrifice, and the sacred landscape. Although we will approach this topic from an art historical perspective, students will be able to see how the fields of art history, archaeology, and anthropology have come together in order to reconstruct the Andean past.
