Bus boycotts, freedom rides, protest songs, and peaceful demonstrations -- these were all a part of the Civil Rights Movement. This course will explore how the leaders of this movement courageously confronted inequality, segregation, and racism in the South. The nonviolent philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi will be discussed in terms of its manifestation in the faith of movement members. Freedom songs, protest songs, and music that united blacks and whites in method and message will also be highlighted. A travel component will take students into the American South to observe and experience various aspects of this movement and era.
