This class will focus on the use of masks and puppets within theatre, and how that use has been affected by their use in society. It will cover the history of mask use, including, but not limited to, ancient man, African and Japanese. We will look at the modern use of masks and how it has grown from historical use, as well as the effect a mask has on a performer. For puppetry, study will be on origins, historical uses and a more modern approach within theatre. Concurrent to this study, one class day each week will focus on construction techniques; such as life casting, negative and positive molds, and a variety of structural and decorative materials. Evaluation will consist of each student writing two papers, two exams and their three hands-on projects. Extra credit will be given for projects that are chosen for use in the theatre's production of Romeo and Juliet.
