The course begins by considering the peopling of ancient America and their subsistence strategies. It then moves toward a primary focus on today's natives of Interior Alaska and their transition from the precontact, aboriginal subsistence economy, to the postcontact lifestyles of today. There will be a specific consideration of living from the land in wilderness Alaska, which will include hunting, gathering, cabin building, travel by dog team, negotiating winter and gold mining. This course is being taught by a special guest, Stephen Alleman. Satisfies Intercultural Requirement. Prerequisite: None Fees: None
