Mediation is a form of conflict management used in many settings today - the legal profession, education, communities, the criminal justice system, and in peace-making groups ranging in scope from local to international impact. This course will help students develop an understanding of (1) the dynamics of conflict, (2) the essentials of conflict management, (3) and the mediation process and its appropriate use. Skills will be taught in the areas of effective communication and facilitation of the mediation process. Students will increase their awareness of how cultural and value differences and ethical standards impact the mediation process. A couple of local field trips may be required. Prerequisites: None.
