The on campus component of this course will spend considerable time discussing the history of Belize and the ethnic divisions of the country and the island where we will be staying much of the time. This will be accomplished through a combination of readings, videos, and lecture/discussion. While in Belize, most of the people the students will interact with represent the major ethnic divisions (Mestizo, Creole, Maya) and discussing their heritage. There will be a visit to at least one Mayan ruin. The other major purpose of the trip is to provide an introduction to tropical ecosystems. Identification, ecology and behavior of marine and terrestrial organisms will be studied. There will be an emphasis on marine biology. Evaluations to be used are 2 written examinations, a journal, quality of work on web pages and participation in activities while in Belize. Pre-requisites: None (except being comfortable on and in the water). Additional Fees: $1,920 Instructor: Bill Pohley
