Description:
This trip will study in situ the Mayas, the premier civilization of the Americas, which thrived for 3,000 years between 1500 BC and 1500 AD. The biologically diverse and challenging natural setting of the civilization will also be investigated. Prof. Cain will address the religious, cultural and archaeological dimensions of the Maya civilization, and Prof. Curry will emphasize the biological and ecological aspects of the natural habitat in which the Maya civilization began, thrived, and then declined. Connections between past and present Maya culture will be noted. Learning activities will include approximately two weeks on-campus portion, while explorations and formal and informal discussions will be held off-campus and on-site. It is likely there will be an exam given before departure and that students will write a paper correlating their experience of Mayan culture in Guatemala with some aspect of their academic major and/or personal interest.
