This multidisciplinary course provides students with a study of Australian society, past and present. Students will consider the major social, political and cultural themes of contemporary Australian society and how they have been shaped by past policies and practice. Of particular importance will be the question of human rights for indigenous people, for those seeking asylum and for marginalized groups excluded from accessing their share of the spoils of the 'lucky country'. The course will also examine Australia's role in global affairs, and students will be expected to make a comparison to other political and cultural trends worldwide, particularly in the light of the war in Iraq. This course aims to: 1) Provide a broad introduction to contemporary Australian society; 2) Explore historical encounters between indigenous and non-indigenous people; 3) Develop an appreciation of Indigenous responses to colonization and the continuing struggle for indigenous rights and justice; 4) Provide and understanding of the way the Australian identity and landscape have been shaped by an emerging nationalism; 5) Analyze the cultural diversity of contemporary Australia; 6) Consider the dominant cultural and political trends emerging by the 21st century in contemporary Australia, and, 7) Examine Australia's contemporary responses to United Nations conventions, protocols and treaties.
