This course offers a survey of the evolution of Italian foreign policy from the reunification of Italy in the Nineteenth century to the recent crisis over the war in Iraq. The course will focus on the role played by Italy in the Nineteenth and Twentieth century international relations and on the main issues of its foreign policy. We will concentrate on Italy's role in the European politics between the end of the 19th century and the first part of the 20th century, and in particular on its colonial ambitions. Emphasis will be given to Italy's position in the bipolar system of the Cold War era and, in particular, on the part played by Italy in the establishment of the Atlantic Alliance and of the European Communities. The last part will focus on the post Cold War era, on the current state of Italy's relations with its neighbors, and with the United States, on the Italian approach to recent major crises - such as the break up of Yugoslavia, the wars in the Middle East and the security issues of the post 9/11 world.
