Description:

This course examines comparative business cultures in a context of international business and management. It covers the work of Clyde Kluckholm and Fred Strodtbeck, Gary Ferraro, Bjorn Bjerke, Fons Trompenaars, Geert Hofstede, as well as the G.L.O.B.E. project. Students will be expected to apply the conceptual knowledge they acquire during the course to analyzing and evaluating case studies and to participating in class discussion. The emphasis of the course is on understanding and applying one's knowledge of the different national cultures as an aid to improve the management of human resources, and to ensure the "melding" of different cultures in multi-national companies and companies involved in joint ventures, mergers or take-overs. Today's manager needs to develop both individual and effective team skills. To the extent possible, students will be encouraged to engage in creative group problem solving, which is intended to challenge them to develop analytical and creative people-management skills. Emphasis in this course is also given to the development of effective business communication skills - formal, brief and concise report writing and oral presentations.
