This course provides students with a framework of the English legal system. It involves the study of the sources of law, the court system, the legal profession, and the way in which law is applied. Students are challenged to use this information to discover how the English legal system deals with controversial contemporary issues. No specific knowledge of the American legal system is required, but comparisons are made between England and America at various stages. The course is of obvious interest to students intending to enter law as a profession. Topics covered include: sources of English law, court structure, criminal procedure, the legal profession, the judiciary, the British constitution, the application of law to specific issues: police powers, consumer protection, censorship, abortion, prostitution, freedom of information.
