The twin conjunctures of the 1930s/40s and 1970s/19080s will be given special attention as decisive moments in the re-ordering of British social and political life and the way the changes related to Britain's sense of itself as a country coming to terms with the perception pf decline and the existence of alternative and potentially disruptive models of modernity.
