This course examines the development of the Roman world from the creation of the Republic to the death of the Emperor Constantine. The guiding theme of the course is the changing political character of Rome (from Monarchy to Republic to Empire), which will be carefully placed into its historical, social, economi and cultural contexts, and discussed with reference to both Rome itself, and the experience of the continually expanding territories over which it exerted control. Class discussion will be guided by careful reading of selected literary texts (in translation), and by examination of the material culture as represented by a selection of archaeological sites in Sicily.
