ACCR MSIT 310 - Symbolic Language of Italian Cinema

Institution:
Arcadia University
Subject:
Description:
This course trains students to understand the main features of cinematic language. It looks at the historical development of the medium in relation to the theories that have evolved about it, and to the wider culture. Primary aspects of the cinematic code (shot, continuity, editing, narrative, direction, film sound, lighting) are analyzed through close study of representative films. The course does not involve filmmaking, but each semester a visit is made to an operating set at Cinecittà. It is a course in which the specialized knowledge and professional affirmation of the Set Design come to the fore. There are encounters with specialists in such areas as lighting and, more important, with internationally recognized figures such as the set designer Gianni Quaranta and director Franco Zeffirelli.
