Comparison of the impact of gender, class and nationality on middle-class, working class and peasant women and men in England, France, Germany, Italy and Russia. The effects of industrialization, nationalism, war, fascism, communism and the welfare state on women and men’s lives. Covers the evolution of the role of girls and women in the family and the changing status of single and married women in the home and the workplace.
