This course provides an introduction to the systematic analysis of societies. How do societies evolve and change, what we can learn from comparing them, how do they make us into the kinds of people we are, and which facts either sustain or shatter everyday life? What do deviance, bureaucracy, racial discrimination, inequality, sexual and social conflict have in common? Students learn about themselves by exploring the hidden roots of the world around them. Note: This course can be used to satisfy a university Core Individual & Society (IN) and Writing Intensive (WI) requirement. Although it may be usable towards graduation as a major requirement or university elective, it cannot be used to satisfy any of the university GenEd requirements.
