An exploration of representations of racial difference in the fiction and drama of African-American and European-American authors. Primary texts will be read in conjunction with screenings of films, to examine the role of visual media in shaping perceptions. How image-making in theater, film, and television has influenced the way racial difference is characterized in literature, with an emphasis on the relationship between criticism and creative process. Note: This course can be used to satisfy the university Core Studies in Race (RS) requirement. Although it may be usable towards graduation as a major requirement or university elective, it cannot be used to satisfy any of the university GenEd requirements.
