Study of the complex variety of experience in America and how American literature is structured by issues: Native, black, and white; frontier and town; female and male; the individual self and the democratic life; private and public; traditional and radical. How literary works reflect historical, social, political, psychological, and cultural settings as well as specific periods and regional concerns. Note: This course can be used to satisfy the university Core American Culture (AC) requirement. Although it may be usable towards graduation as a major requirement or university elective, it cannot be used to satisfy any of the university GenEd requirements.
