What kinds of arguments did people use to attack - and support - slavery, and what difference did those literatures make? This course examines the intersection of persuasive writing and the institution of slavery from 1680 to the Civil War, with a special focus on the antebellum period, when the problem of slavery came to occupy a central role in American politics and American literature.Note: This course can be used to satisfy the university Core Studies in Race (RS) requirement. Although it may be usable towards graduation as a major requirement or university elective, it cannot be used to satisfy any of the university GenEd requirements.
