Each surgical specialty course teaches basic surgical anatomy, instrumentation, and procedural steps. Surgical Procedures I describe the specific skills for assisting with diagnostic procedures, general surgery, gastrointestinal, obstetrical, gynecological, otorhinolaryngology, oral/maxillofacial, orthopedics, and genitourinary procedures. PREREQUISITES: HNUR 1211, HNUR 1300, HNUR 1351, ORNT 1000, CPTR 1000, SURG 1000, SURG 1201, SURG 1302, SURG 2201 COURSE OBJECTIVES: Identify and describe the techniques used to aid the physician in establishing preoperative diagnosis based of pertinent patient data. List the sources of patient data. List and discuss techniques used to establish preoperative diagnosis. Identify the major indications for surgical intervention. Describe the operative sequence in the opening and closing of a surgical wound. Define types of common abdominal incisions. Discuss instrumentation and suture sequence for opening and closing the abdomen. For each surgical specialty: Discuss the relevant anatomy. Describe the pathology that prompts surgical intervention and the related terminology. Identify the names and uses of special instruments, supplies, and drugs. Identify the names and uses of special equipment. Discuss the intraoperative preparation of the patient. Define and give an overview of the surgical procedure. Discuss the purpose and expected outcomes of the surgery.
