The course provides classroom instruction in nomenclature, theory, technique, and safety considerations of accomplishing work using various tools and equipment as well as practical water experience. PREREQUISITES: DIVE 1010 Diving Physics, DIVE 1030 Diving Physiology, DIVE 1040 Air Decompression, DIVE 1050 Dive Medicine, DIVE 1111 Marine Engines and Compressors, DIVE 1100 Diving Equipment (taken concurrently), Dive physical, Must have passed pre-pressure quiz and line-pull signal test. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Describe proper breathing on ascent. Describe proper use of the lifeline. Describe the guidelines fro ditching helmet of mask. Describe the proper method of dressing. Locate the air control valve. Locate the exhaust valve. Describe the proper use of the weight belt. Describe proper ditching of weights. Describe the proper method of securing the lifeline to the diver. Describe proper water entry. Use hand line signals. Find a lost object underwater. Assemble a flange underwater. Perform emergency procedures for loss of breathing gas. Remove a blank flange underwater. Use an angle descending line. Use an airlift underwater. Assemble a multiple bolt and flange project underwater. Describe safety precautions when using tools underwater. Demonstrate the proper maintenance and inspection of tools. Identify hand tools. Identify pneumatic tools. Identify hydraulic tools. Identify airlifts. Use tools in the water with proper safety precautions. Maintain tools. Use proper tending, communication, and timekeeping/chart procedures. Discuss lift bags. TEXTBOOKS AND OTHER MATERIALS: Wet suit, Weight belt. ATTENDANCE POLICY: In the Commercial Diving Program attendance limits are 30 hours per semester or 10% of any course. Exceeding these limits will result in being dropped from the program. An absence at test time will result in a zero for the test. EVALUATION AND GRADING: Evaluation is by performance tests. Each individual test must be passed with a grade of 70% or more. A student is allowed a maximum of 2 attempts to pass a test. If a grade of 70% is still not achieved the course must be repeated. If a test is passed on the 2nd attempt a maximum grade of 70% will be recorded regardless of the score achieved. An absence at test time is regarded as the first attempt and receives a zero. The student must also complete all assigned projects. The grading scale at Louisiana Technical College for all programs, except those regulated by a licensing board, is listed below. The students' transcript will include the letter grade only, not the percentage grade. 90% - 100% A 80% - 89% B 70% - 79% C 60% - 69% D 59% - Below F ACADEMIC HONESTY: Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited.
