Credits: 3 Prerequisite: PHYS 1411, MATH 2458 or concurrent enrollment This course deals with rigid-body mechanics and provides a necessary background for the study of the mechanics of deformable bodies. Statics deals with structures in equilibrium; that is, structures at rest or moving with a constant velocity. It develops the equations of equilibrium and applies them to the analysis of simple engineering structures and machines. Specific subjects include equilibrium of trusses, frames and machines, the analysis of frictional forces and topics relating to the center of gravity and mass moments of inertia.
