This course is a survey of postwar Japanese cinema. We examine seminal works by key directors-including Kurosawa Akira, Ozu Yasujiro, Oshima Nagisa, Miike takashi, Mlyazaki Hayao, and Kurosawa Kiyoshi. All films are 'Japanese' (while the question of 'national cinema' is one of the questions this course will raise) with English subtitles. Background in cinema studies is a plus, but all students interested in cinema are welcome. 3 Lect Hrs, 3 Credits.
