TT 8:00 SARNO In this course we will be reading and discussing books by Susan Cheever, Bob Dylan, Sam Shepard, Roland Merullo, Joan Didion, Susanna Kaysen, Andre Dubus and others. Although the reading list is comprised primarily of memoir, additional essays, literary works and critical articles will be assigned. We will also address biography and "autobiographical" fiction. Students will discover the differences in literary genres as well as some of the common elements of a successful work of literature - whether it be fiction or non fiction There will be several writing assignments. These essays will focus on the works assigned, but will also include your own life writing exercises. Some of your homework will be presented in 'workshop' fashion. Student ideas, interpretations and responses matter; class participation constitutes a major component of this course. Political correctness will not be necessary; respect, sensitivity and appreciation of others' opinions will be mandatory.
