Introduction to key characteristics of the U.S. social welfare state. Examination of the socio-historical foundations and political economy of social welfare including the role of interest groups, courts, and public bureaucracies in molding U.S. social welfare. Special emphasis placed on policies and political issues related to poverty, race, and gender. Exploration of contemporary debates regarding devolution, privatization and the free-market, the role of faith-based organizations, and the role and politics of research.
