Language course for advanced students of Russian, including native/near-native speakers, focusing on issues of contemporary Russia through the lens of politics and media. Topics include the post-Soviet political landscape, rise of nationalism, state power, public expression, journalism, and crime. Course material includes mass media, pop culture, TV, documentaries, news and the Internet. Work includes essays, oral reports, and an independent research project. All work and materials in Russian. Prerequisites Russian 122 or permission of instructor.
