Exploration of multicultural U.S. literature before 1860, with attention divided equally among Native American, African American, Asian American, white European American, and Latino/a texts. Special emphasis on the literary forms that authors used to express new and often insurgent views in the first half of the nineteenth century, with particular focus on the role of literature in contributing to progressive social change. Prerequisites ENGLISH 0001/ 0002 REQUIRED or Fulfillment of College Writing Requirement. Recommended that the student already have taken either English 20,21,22, or 23.
