The role of metal ions in living organisms; understanding and modeling. Metal ion transport and storage, biocoordination chemistry of ion pumps. Metal ion folding and cross-linking of biomolecules. Small molecule (oxygen, nitrogen) binding and activation. Hydrolytic and redox metalloenzymes. Structure-function relationships in metalloenzyme mimics. Bioinorganic chemistry and drug design. Prerequisites Chemistry 61 or 161, or permission of instructor.
