(Cross-listed as Biomedical Engineering 164 and Biology 174.) Synthesis, characterization, and functional properties of organic and inorganic biomaterials, and the process of tissue engineering are covered. Fundamental issues related to the utility of biomaterials are explored based on their biocompatibility, stability, interfaces, and fate in the body. Clinical applications for biomaterials are investigated, as are new directions in design and synthesis to achieve better biocompatibility. Testing methods, regulatory issues, legal constraints, and emerging research directions are also discussed. Prerequisites Permission of instructor.
