Position of women within Asian social systems, as shaped by social structure, economics, and ideology. Examines traditional systems of China, Japan, and Southeast Asia and the impact of widespread literacy and formal education, market penetration, multinational labor recruitment, and nonindigenous ideologies (Christianity, Islam, socialism) on women's lives in contemporary Asia. Prerequisites Sophomore standing or permission of instructor.
