Expressions and functions of festive behavior throughout Latin America. The course will penetrate an apparently homogeneous Roman Catholic ideology and demonstrate how widely differing ethnic and political groups use public performance in a non-Western context to express their varied interests. Examples will include Carnival, Corpus Christi, San Juan, Qollur Rit'i, and Yawar Fiesta. Prerequisites Junior standing and one sociocultural anthropology course, or permission of instructor.
