Introductory, interdisciplinary survey comparing how individual and collective identities have formed in the United States, and how these identities have been analyzed and interpreted by scholars across various disciplines. Emphasizes how identity formation has been shaped by social, political and cultural systems, with particular attention to spatial and social location. Content of the course will vary depending on the discipline and area specialty of the faculty teaching it; consult the American Studies website for further details.
