From the end of the Civil War to the present, baseball has reflected the evolution of urbanization, immigration, segregation, the rise of labor, entrepreneurial capitalism, crime, corruption, and legal precedents that reached to the Supreme Court. We will examine "The National Pastime" both inside and outside the lines, how it was played, and the place of this children's game in the American psyche.
