A course which surveys non-fiction, fiction, poetry, and drama by African American, Native American, Asian American, and Chicano/a writers. Emphasis is placed not only on how these literary artists have diversified and enriched the American scene through their own unique ethnic and racial perspectives, but also on the ways literature of "marginalized" peoples has accepted, contributed to, and challenged "mainstream" American values. Some writers who may be taught include Frederick Douglass, Black Elk, Zora Neale Hurston, Ralph Ellison, Rudolfo Anaya, Leslie Marmon Silko, Maxine Hong Kingston, Toni Morrison, and others.
