A study of the development of painting and sculpture from the fourteenth to the eighteenth centuries in Europe. Special attention will be given to the relationship between visual images and intellectual concepts such as the revival of classicism, the emergence of humanism and the influence of mathematics. Major masters and monuments (Michelangelo, Leonardo, Raphael, and Bernini) will be studied, with emphasis on the general artistic principles of the Renaissance and Baroque styles.
