2 semester hours The course involves a study of life guarding beyond American Red Cross requirements that include rescue techniques and safety procedures. Each student will be asked to identify common hazards associated with various types of aquatic facilities and develop skills necessary to recognize a person in a distress or drowning situation and to effectively rescue that person. This course will help each student understand the lifeguard/employer and lifeguard/patron relationship as well as provide explanations, demonstrations, practice and review of the rescue skills essential for lifeguards. The student has an opportunity to earn American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and Professional CPR certification. Prerequisite: PHED 114 (Aquatics I) or consent of instructor.
