10S: 2 A study of early modern philosophy in the British empiricist tradition of the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Focus is on the major works of Locke, Berkeley and Hume, though possibly with attention to some others (e.g. Bacon, Hobbes, Reid). Central themes include substance, perception, secondary qualities, cognition, meaning, causation, identity and reality. Prerequisite: Philosophy 1, 2, 3, 6, 8, or 9, or permission of the instructor.
