Topics include: British voyages of trans-Atlantic exploration; the effects of trans-Atlantic contacts on communal life and settlement patterns; navies, merchant seamen, and pirates; the slave trade; life in port towns and coastal villages; the lore and creative traditions of Anglo-American maritime culture; and the impact of European competition on the British vision of an Anglo-Atlantic world.
