Subjects covered include the thirteen colonies as offshoots of British capitalism; the long-term significance of plantation slavery; regional specialization and uneven development; the significance of technologies including railroads, electrical power, automobiles, and computers; the rise of big corporate business and its impact on markets and workers; mass consumer culture; the military-industrial complex; globalization since 1980; and long term patterns in the distribution of wealth and income.
