09W: 11 This course will focus on Irish history, from the ill-fated Uprising of 1798 to the emergence of the Irish Free State in the early 1920s. Major themes will include: the making of the Protestant Ascendancy; agrarian protest in pre-Famine Ireland; the Great Famine and its consequences; the rise of a new Irish nationalism and revitalized Catholic Church; and the struggle for independence that culminated in the achievement of a truncated and quasi-independent "Free State".Open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
